The Documentation Center was designed by a group of women at the end of the 1970s and has been managed, since 1983, in agreement between the Orlando Association and the Municipality of Bologna. It is now one of the most important documentation centers in the European context.
The Women’s History Archive collects paper, sound and visual documents produced by theoretical research and the activities of the Women’s Documentation Center of Bologna and the Orlando association. An important crossroads of contemporary feminisms, the Archive preserves the documentation of other groups and associations, events, and local, national and international networks. In addition, it combines both collective testimonies and personal archives.
The Italian Women’s Library in Bologna is “the most important library specialized in women’s culture, gender studies and feminism in Italy”.
It has a heritage of more than 40,000 volumes included in the Single Catalogue of the National Library Service, and holds 600 periodicals, of which 50 are active.
The Center generates, transmits and implements visions, theories and political practices of women. It promotes local, national and international networks for the implementation of activities aimed at promoting gender relations and differences, the protection of women’s rights and freedoms.
